First Friday brings new art to town

BAKER CITY — This month, the First Friday art walk on May 3 includes a wide variety of new artwork at galleries and shops that stay open late. Here’s a look at the stops.

Crossroads Carnegie Art Center

2020 Auburn Ave.

Crossroads will open “Twisted Twins Art Exposé: A Curio of Animals” by Carrie Whitney and Connie Robbins on Friday, May 3, 5 p.m.

Twin sisters — painter Carrie Whitney and batik artist Connie Robbins — present their show dedicated to the celebration of animal portraits.

Whitney, of Whidbey Island, Washington, captures through color and shape a mood or feeling that is expressed by gestures of the body or symbolism of color, rather than portraying a literal depiction of a person or animal.

Robbins lives in Burns and works in batik, an Indonesian art form that involves wax-resist dyeing applied to cloth that produces unique patterns and designs. She has applied the same technique to fiber papers.

“Teaching at the only rural public dormitory school in the country and growing up and living in the far stretches of Eastern Oregon has given me a unique perspective on rural culture and nature,” she said.

Churchill Hall Pass Gallery

3451 Broadway St.

Churchill will feature the work of Jefry Hobson. The show starts at 5:30 p.m.

Geiser Grand Hotel

1996 Main St.

The hotel joins the First Friday festivities with violin music by Lindianne Sappington from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and drink specials.

Royal Artisan

1912 Main St.

Royal Artisan will feature the show “Seasons of Light,” a display of photography by John Clement, and live music by D’Club L’Eveque, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Sweet Wife Baking

2028 Main St.

The bake shop will feature the work of Judith Stoffer and her show “Affection for Place” featuring landscapes painted in oils. The opening reception is Friday, 5-8 p.m., and her work will remain on display through May.

Baker Food Co-op

2008 Broadway St.

The co-op will feature Joshua Dillen of Sourdough Jamz for “the art of food” from 4-7 p.m.
