BAKER CITY — Two musicians bring varied music — and accents — to the stage on Friday, May 10, at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St.
The evening features Oisín Moore and Nick Hans.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance at churchillbaker.com or $25 at the door. Admission is free for ages 15 and younger who attend with a paid adult.
The musicOisín Moore grew up in Newbliss, Ireland, and moved to Baker City two years ago. Although he always loved music, and learned how to play guitar from his dad, he didn’t pursue it until his late teens.
As a young teenager, he said he was “too cool to sing.”
Then a few years later: “Being a musician is actually really cool.”
He started writing lyrics.
“It was my way of dealing with life,” he said.
And then he saw a band busking outside of a music store.
“It gave me the motivation to buy a microphone and microphone stand,” he said. “I just started singing.”
His songs made it on the radio, and his first live performance was on an Irish television station. The pandemic cancelled music festivals and several years later he moved to the United States with his wife.
“This is my first American show,” he said.
He’ll be joined onstage by Wit McKnight, Griffin Doubrava, Ryan Boothby, Jeffry Forbes and Mark Emerson.
Nick Hans left Tennessee in his late teens and “began crisscrossing the country by freight train, working seasonal jobs, farming, and living in punk and radical communities.”
Then he found a cassette tape with Leadbelly on one side and Woody Guthrie on the other and was “blown away by the beauty and power of those legendary musicians and their songs. He picked up a beat-up Stella guitar, and has been writing and playing his own songs ever since.”
He spent many years living in New Orleans and now lives in Taos, New Mexico, where he continues to farm, work and write music.
