Go fish!

HERMISTON — The fish will be biting June 1 as Hermiston Parks and Recreation hosts its Kids Fishing Derby.

An annual event, the derby is open to kids ages 2 to 12. More than 2,500 fish will be stocked in the fountain pond at McNary Dam, and kids will be encouraged to throw in their lines and try and bring in the biggest fish — or a prize fish.

To receive a prize, participants will need to catch a “prize fish,” which has a tag that can be traded in.

“On the back of a fish that’s been tagged, there will be a plastic tag, you bring that to the table, and we’ll give you a prize,” Diana Picard, of Hermiston Parks and Recreation, said.

Children will be able to keep or release the caught fish, and there is a three fish limit during the Kids Fishing Derby, whether participants choose to keep the fish or release it.

Sponsored by Rogers Toyota of Hermiston, the Kids Fishing Derby is free. Families only need to bring appropriate attire and fishing gear in order to participate. Parents are welcome to assist their children, but all fish must be reeled in by children until noon. After the noon mark, parents are encouraged to fish alongside their kids.

“We just do it so families can get together and have fun, to introduce your little ones to fishing and then to fish with your family,” Picard said. “We’re providing the space, some fun things, and the fish. Come and have fun.”

In some past years, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has provided equipment for the event, but they are not participating this year. Parks and Recreation will not have loaner poles, so families will need to bring their own fishing equipment. Parks and Recreation will, however, be providing some bait, fish and prizes.

An event tent on site will be staffed to answer questions and provide any needed first aid.

The Kids Fishing Derby runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 1, in the fountain pond at McNary Dam. To get there, enter the McNary Dam property and continue down Devore Road until turning left at Third Street, just across from the fish viewing room on the dam.
