PENDLETON — Supporting youth in Pendleton is as easy as drinking a cold one.
This year’s Wild West Beerfest starts at noon on Saturday, June 15, at Roy Raley Park in Pendleton. A youth scholarship fundraiser, the event runs from noon to 9 p.m. at Roy Raley Park in Pendleton, 1205 SW Court Ave.
Sponsored by Hill’s Premium Meats, Wild West Beerfest features a selection of microbrews from across the Pacific Northwest, multiple food and vendor booths and live music. This year’s musical lineup includes Elwood, the Neon Prairie Dogs, and the High Mileage Band.
Cost for this 21-and-older event is in tiers based on how many samples attendees would like:
- Entry and commemorative glass: $15
- Entry, a commemorative glass and four beer tokens: $20
- Non-drinker entry (no glass): $10
Each token is worth one sample of beer, and three tokens can be turned in for a full mug. Additional beer tokens can be purchased for $2 each or 12 for $20.
In the past, Wild West Beerfest has been organized by Pendleton Parks and Recreation. This year, Parks and Rec has handed it over to the Pendleton City Club.
“I am really happy to see the City Club taking on this event,” said Liam Hughes, Parks and Recreation director. “When we announced that we would no longer be running the event, I figured it would just die. Then the Pendleton City Club approached me about taking over the event, and I thought it was a great idea. Firstly, because their mission is focused on raising money to help youth in the community, and, secondly, because City Club has a fantastic volunteer base who are well connected in the Pendleton community that could really help the event. I think they are the right group to grow the event and make it a huge success.”
All proceeds from the event will go to the Pendleton City Club.
“The Pendleton City Club is a group of gentlemen whose sole purpose is to help serve the community by volunteering, supporting the youth of our community, and doing so while socializing with community members like themselves,” City Club President Tim Simons said. “Every dollar our club makes from any service we provide or event we put on, sponsor, or volunteer for goes entirely back to youth programs within our community.”
Pendleton City Club traces its roots back more than four decades as Pendleton’s branch of international service organization, the Optimist International Club. When organizational changes required proceeds to be sent to the international headquarters in St. Louis, the local branch separated and renamed the club “The Pendleton City Club” in order to keep funds raised local. The club has now donated more than a quarter million dollars to local youth activities.
Funds from the Pendleton City Club are distributed through grants. Youth organizations are encouraged to submit grant requests, and a committee then selects projects and awards funding.
