BAKER CITY — Joh Chase admits that balancing a music career and teaching music at an elementary school is a bit of a juggling act.
“The day after school (was out) I was playing a show,” Chase said of the summer of 2023. “This summer I scaled it back to just the West Coast.”
Chase said this summer’s itinerary has “bite-sized tours.”
“I don’t want to be gone for two months,” Chase said.
Chase, along with Brittany Ann Tranbaugh, will play a show in Baker City on Wednesday, June 19, at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 in advance at churchillbaker.com or $22 at the door. Admission is free for ages 15 and younger who attend with a paid adult.
Chase grew up in the Seattle area but has lived in Los Angeles for two decades.
“I grew up in an evangelical megachurch — I had so much music programming in my life,” Chase said. “I’ve been writing songs since I was a little kid. My first performance was at a bookstore when I was 11.”
While early songs grappled with leaving the church, Chase drew from a lifetime of music to pave a new musical career.
“My brain is completely filled with the music I was raised on: Elton John, The Cranberries, Bonnie Raitt, and the Mamas and the Papas,” Chase said.
Chase released a new record, titled “Solo,” on April 26 via Kill Rock Stars.
This is Chase’s first time touring in Eastern Oregon, and other shows include Portland, the Seattle area and California.
Tranbaugh, who is based in Philadelphia, will join Chase on this West Coast tour.
Tranbaugh has been writing songs and playing shows as a side gig since she was a teenager, but in February 2023 decided to quit an office job and pursue music as a full-time career.
Her song, “Kiss You,” won Song of the Year in the 2021 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and her newest release is a self-titled EP produced by Grammy-winner Tyler Chester.
