BAKER CITY — Sunday afternoons will once again bring live music to Geiser-Pollman Park as the Powder River Music Revue season begins June 23.
Concerts are held from 4-6 p.m. at the Powder River Pavilion in the park. The season runs from June 23 to Sept. 8.
“We’ve got a good group of musicians, and the majority are locals — Baker City, La Grande, Wallowa,” said Rory Noble, president of the nonprofit organization.
He said the first show is scheduled one week later than usual in hopes of better weather, because June can sometimes be soggy and cool.
The first concert features the Walla Walla group Rogue Lobster, with a sound described as “Americana bluegrass crustacean.”
Since 2013, Rogue Lobster has played about 350 shows and released three full-length albums. Their sound ranges from traditional bluegrass to Americana and modern folk, focusing on three-part harmonies and instrumental leads. All four members compose and collaborate on their original material.
Band members are Libby Miller, a professor of art history at Whitman College, Jerry Yokel, lead chemist for the Department of Ecology at the Hanford Site, JR Van Slyke, professor of history at the community college in Walla Walla, and Adam Kirtley, who is the interfaith chaplain at Whitman College.
About the music series
In 2023, the Powder River Music Revue concerts averaged an audience of about 100, which organizers say is an increase over previous years.
The music series is supported by grants, sponsorships and donations. Each performance is free, although the audience can donate by buying raffle tickets for prizes, such as gift cards donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets are $5 each or $20 for five.
Also, season memberships are available for $35. Members receive one free raffle ticket at each concert, plus 10% off PRMR merchandise, and they will be listed on the website’s membership page. Members will also be entered in a drawing for one free membership for the following calendar year.
In addition, Noble said sponsorships are still available for the music calendar that is distributed each week at the concerts.
