BAKER CITY — With a new record released just a month ago, Blitzen Trapper is touring more this year than in the recent past.
“We’re playing more shows, which is cool,” said frontman Eric Earley. “That show in Baker City is the first of a two-week tour.”
Blitzen Trapper plays a show on Saturday, June 29, at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance at churchillbaker.com or $30 at the door. Admission is free for ages 15 and younger who attend with a paid adult.
Blitzen Trapper, based in Portland, formed in 2007. They’ve released more than 10 full-length albums, and the newest, titled “100’s of 1000s, Millions of Billions,” released May 17. It can be found on streaming platforms, CD and LP.
Earley writes all the music, and said the lyrics and music are developed together.
“I want them to intertwine,” he said.
Although their touring has been limited in most years to around 40 shows, Earley said they’ve played in every state — including Alaska and Hawaii.
The Baker City show will feature Earley along with Brian Koch (drums/vocals), Michael Elson (keys/bass) and Nate Vanderpool (guitar/vocals).
With a vast catalog of music, including the new record, Earley said the show will feature quite a variety.
“We’ll be doing a little of everything,” he said. “There are a lot of old songs people want to hear.”
Anna Tivel
Blitzen Trapper is joined on this short tour by Anna Tivel.
Tivel grew up in a small Washington town where she learned violin as a child, and moved to Portland when she turned 18.
“I grew up in a family that loved records and folk music,” she said.
She’s been touring as a musician for about 12 years — although she didn’t always envision this as a career path.
“As a kid, I didn’t consider it was something you could do with your life,” she said.
She’s played shows regionally, across the United States and even Europe. She’s joining Blitzen Trapper for shows in Baker City and Boise.
She’s released six albums including her newest, titled “Living Thing.”
“All these songs were written during that first isolated year of the pandemic,” she said of the new record. “It was a time of watching humans and the way we struggle and reach toward each other when something’s going on that nobody understands.”
