What We’re Into

Dr. Mikhail “Mike” Varshavski’s YouTube channel, “Doctor Mike” provides a variety of medical-related content to more than 12 million subscribers.

I scan YouTube for debunkers and skeptics of all sorts, and that’s how I found Dr. Mike.

Mikhail “Mike” Oskarovich Varshavski is a family physician and internet personality who has been a YouTuber since 2017. On his YouTube channel, “Doctor Mike,” he puts out a variety of content, and a chunk of that is about debunking false medical claims, particularly those trending on TikTok.

He’s direct about when health and medical claims are wrong, but his delivery is entertaining, even when serious. But his videos span a lot more than debunking.

His “Medical Drama Reacts” are older videos reacting to medical scenes from a number of TV series, from the former hit show “House” to the sci-fi animation comedy “Futurama.” He breaks down the right, the wrong and the questionable.

His latest work on YouTube is “The Checkup with Doctor Mike,” where he interviews actors, YouTubers, athletes, performers and other medical professionals about their health, bodies and issues in health care. These conversations get in-depth and can span a couple of hours.

In the episode “Confronting Dr. Gundry On Lectins | Inflammation & Leaky Gut,” Varshavski challenges Dr. Steven Gundry on his claims that in some cases smoking is extending people’s lives. As controversial as Gundry’s claim is, Varshavski is polite throughout. It’s the kind of interview that reporters could benefit from viewing.
