JOSEPH — Chief Joseph Days, the weeklong celebration of rodeo in Joseph, is built around its four nights of Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action.

But the 78th annual edition of the event, which began July 23, has other activities scattered through the week, including music, dances, two parades, a walk to raise money for mammograms, a Nez Perce friendship feast, and its Buckaroo Rodeo, an event for children and adults with special needs.

Most events are scheduled at or near the Harley Tucker Memorial Arena, 405 W. Wallowa Ave. in Joseph.

Here’s a quick guide:

• The Buckaroo Rodeo, for children and adults with special needs, includes activities such as a stick-horse barrel race and a gentle bull riding event. It starts at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 24 at the Harley Tucker Memorial Arena.

• A family fun night is scheduled for the Thunder Room, on the arena grounds, after Wednesday’s opening night of the rodeo. The event includes family-friendly music and a mechanical bull and bounce house. There’s a $5 cover charge. (Children 6 and under get into the rodeo for free on Wednesday.)

• A “Miles for Mammogram” walk of about 3 miles will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. The walk, which starts and ends at the Harley Tucker Memorial Arena, is meant to raise awareness and money for mammograms. It’s open to all ages and abilities. For information, visit chiefjosephdays.com/miles_for_mammograms. (Thursday is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night at the rodeo.)

• Musician Scotty Wilson performs Thursday at about 9 p.m. in the Thunder Room. The show, open to patrons 21 and older, is free.

• Whiskey Creek, the Walla Walla country and classic-rock band, performs for the fourth time at Chief Joseph Days on Friday and Saturday. The 21-plus shows are expected to start at about 9:30 p.m. There’s a $5 cover charge.

• Teen dances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m., directly across from the rodeo grounds in the parking lot of the city-owned Boise Cascade building. There’s a $5 cover charge. (This dance usually is held in the Joseph Community Events Center, but a fire there has temporarily closed the building).

• The Chief Joseph Days Junior Parade begins at 10 a.m. Friday on Joseph’s Main Street. The Grand Parade is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in Joseph and is followed by the Nez Perce Friendship Feast at noon in the encampment on the rodeo grounds.
