UNION — There will be lots of family fun in store at the annual Grassroots Festival and Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 10, so wear your crazy hat, if you have one, and participate in a great day of competitive fun, food and music.

County Commissioner Donna Beverage has been the primary organizer of this family-friendly festival for the last 14 years of its 30-year history. She welcomes everyone to join in the community fun.

“The timeline of events is similar to last year’s except we’re adding a crazy hat contest, and we’ll be awarding the winners at 4 p.m. at the gazebo at the park,” Beverage said.

Traditionally, the festival offers day-long yard sales. The maps are available at 6 p.m. the night before at the post office and businesses. At 9 a.m., craft and food vendors will be set up, and a library book and bake sale will start.

At 1 p.m., the puppet show behind the library will start.

At the park, the kiddie carnival and a pie eating contest will take place as well as pony rides from 1:30-4 p.m. The plastic duck race at 2 p.m. in Catherine Creek is a fundraiser for the Union High School seniors for their class trip.

Main Street will be closed off to vehicles, so the public can walk on the street to check out the sidewalk chalk art contest. Artists can pick up their chalk at the Union Merc the night before and start creating their sidewalk art Friday night.

Winners will be awarded the next day.

The car show and poker walk starts at 9 a.m., and at 3:30 p.m. 30 plaques will be awarded and one prestigious “Star of the Show” trophy. The lawnmower races run from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“We are planning to have live music at the park from 4-6 p.m. because the Union County Farm Crawl is the same day as Grassroots, and they end up in Union for the local farm dinner,” Beverage said.

Music will be provided throughout the day and for the family street dance from 7:30-10 p.m. by disc jockey Kasey Kunkel.
