Celebrate Baker City’s 150th birthday
BAKER CITY — This year is Baker City’s official 150th birthday, and the town is celebrating with two days of music and activities. The theme is “Celebrating Baker City 150: Gold, Cattle, Lumber and Legacy.”
The event kicks off Friday, Aug. 9, with vendors in Geiser-Pollman Park starting at noon, and music by Frank Carlson in Geiser-Pollman Park from 4-6 p.m.
Activities continue on Saturday, Aug. 10, with breakfast and a pop-up car show by Baker City Show and Shine from 8 a.m. to noon at Geiser-Pollman Park. Art in Central Park runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with booths, performances, competitions and art.
Main Street will be closed from 3-10 p.m. on Saturday to accommodate numerous activities, including a street dance with Bag of Hammers starting at 7 p.m.

It’s fair and rodeo time in Hermiston
HERMISTON — The Umatilla County Fair is Aug. 7-10, 10 a.m. to midnight (1 a.m. on Saturday) at the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center. Daily admission for ages 11 and up is $12; children are free.
The Davis Shows Northwest carnival opens daily at 2 p.m. (noon on Saturday). Daily unlimited ride wristbands are $40.
Limited bleacher seats are available with fair admission for the main stage shows at 9 p.m. nightly: Pecos & the Rooftops (Aug. 7), Kameron Marlowe (Aug. 8) and Theory of a Deadman (Aug. 9). General seating and fan pit tickets range from $15-$25 via www.umatillacountyfair.net.
The Latino Night dance and concert on Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. features four musical acts, including headliner Banda Rancho Viejo. Tickets are $50 each.
The week also brings the 36th annual Farm-City Pro Rodeo from Aug. 7-10, at 7:45 p.m. Each performance begins with mutton bustin’ followed by professional cowboys and cowgirls vying for a share of the purse.

‘Raise the roof’ fundraiser planned in Wallowa
WALLOWA — Timber Bronze LLC is planning a special event to raise funds to preserve the historic grain elevator complex in Wallowa. It features local entertainment, food, drinks and a silent auction on Friday, Aug. 9, 5-8 p.m. at 101½ E. Fifth St.
The grain elevator, built in 1951, was severely damaged in 2022 during a hailstorm that devastated the town. It also houses the Timber Bronze business, where owner Garrett Lowe handcrafts country farmhouse bronze doorbells, classic drawer pulls, mushroom bottle stoppers, and larger bronze artworks.
Funds will go toward preserving the remaining structure to be used as a community hub and experience center for the town and those traveling through Wallowa.

Bon Bon Vivant tours into Baker City
BAKER CITY — Bon Bon Vivant’s show on Friday, Aug. 9 is also the membership party for KBZR, the community radio station that goes live soon from Baker City.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music begins at 6:45 p.m. at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
Based in New Orleans, Bon Bon Vivant spends summers in the Pacific Northwest playing festivals and venues. The band includes Abigail Cosio (lead vocals/guitar), Jeremy Kelley (saxophone), Ellis Seiberling (trombone), Jason Jurzak (sousaphone/bass) and Deacon Marrquin (drums).
Formed in 2014, they describe their sound as Americana jazz and storytelling. The band has released a new single every month leading up to their new album that comes out this fall.
Gallery show comes from Schnitzer collection
PENDLETON — A gallery show that includes seven artists and 23 works that were selected for their range of imagery, styles and printmaking techniques is featured at Pendleton Center for the Arts.
The opening reception for “Contemporary Asian and Asian American Art: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation” is Thursday, Aug. 8, 5:30-7 p.m. in the center’s East Oregonian Gallery, 214 N. Main St. The event is free and open to the public.
New York artist Jacob Hashimoto, whose work is included in the exhibit, will attend the reception. He creates complex worlds from a range of modular components: bamboo-and-paper kites, model boats and even astroturf-covered blocks.

Learn about the Van Ornum massacre
BAKER CITY — Baker Heritage Museum, 2480 Grove St., will host a slide show and talk on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 7 p.m. The topic is the Van Ornum massacre near Huntington.
Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the talk starts at 7 p.m. Attendance is free; donations are welcome. This presentation is sponsored by the Friends of the Baker Heritage Museum.
Wine and Bachata dancing in La Grande

Morrow County Fair opens Aug. 14
HEPPNER — Shining a spotlight on family and community, the 2024 Morrow County Fair kicks off Wednesday, Aug. 14, 9 a.m. at the Morrow County Fairgrounds, 74473 Highway 74. Admission is free.
Opening day highlights include live 4-H food contests from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a small animal show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For some light-hearted fun, catch Dr. Jon, a comedy hypnotist act at 4 p.m. Also, the Public Style Revue runs from 5-7 p.m.
And Lenn Greer will prepare tri-tip for the fair appreciation dinner at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome. Tickets are $15 at the fair office. Live music features fiddle player Michelle Lambert.

Historical society hosts potluck, meeting
LA GRANDE — The Union County Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Log Cabin at the Union County Fairgrounds, 3604 N. Second St.

Wednesdays in the Park welcomes Portland musicianPENDLETON — Stephanie Schneiderman will perform Wednesday, Aug. 14, 6-8 p.m. at Roy Raley Park, 1205 SW Court Ave.
The Portland singer-songwriter blends folk, indie pop, Americana and electronic music. Schneiderman launched her solo career in 1999 after being selected to perform as part of Lilith Fair, a traveling music festival co-founded by Sarah McLachlan.

Air museum soars in Pendleton
PENDLETON — The Pendleton Air Museum recently announced its regular hours are Mondays and Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 21 SW Emigrant Ave.
A group interested in preserving Pendleton’s aviation and military history initially formed several decades ago — and then opened the doors to an actual physical museum in the fall of 2017.
