Fossil Fridays rolls out downtown fun

FOSSIL — The final Fossil Fridays of the 2024 season will be held in downtown Fossil.

The event features an artisan market, kids games, museum tours and a beer garden on Friday, Aug. 16, 4-8 p.m. In addition, local businesses will offer special deals. Also, live music tunes up from 6-8 p.m. with Deep Roots Revival.

Casa Carnival is happening Aug. 17 in La Grande

LA GRANDE — CASA of Eastern Oregon will have a CASA Carnival on Saturday, Aug. 17, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Riverside Park, 3501 Spruce St. Entry is $5 per child from ages 2 to 18, and includes all booths, horse/pony ride and train.

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. A CASA is a trained volunteer who advocates for the best interest of children who are brought into state care due to abuse and neglect.

CASA of Eastern Oregon serves Baker, Grant, Union, Harney, Lake and Malheur counties. Volunteers are needed, and trainings are held throughout the year. For information, visit casaeo.org or email info@casaeo.org.

Cool off at the M-F swimming pool

MILTON-FREEWATER — Milton-Freewater’s Joe Humbert Family Aquatic Center, 210 De Haven St. in Yantis Park, provides aquatic recreation opportunities for all ages and abilities. The facility is ADA-compliant and has zero-depth gradual entry access.

Daily fees are $3.50 youth and $5 for age 18 and older. The season ends Aug. 23. The pool offers open swim from 1-7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1-6 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Mornings are filled with aerobics, lap swim and swimming lessons.

A new swimming pool was one of the projects that helped Milton-Freewater earn an All America City Award in 1961. The current facility, finished in 1996, was funded with the passage of a general obligation bond. The facility has a 25-meter six-lane pool, three-story flume water slide, bathhouse, concession stand, covered shelter, sand volleyball court, and kids play area. It is named for local contractor Joe Humbert who donated time and equipment to accomplish the project.

Tune up with Sisters in Song

PENDLETON — Sisters in Song, a community women’s choir, is starting to prepare for the Holiday Music Festival.

Director Cheryl Carlson invites women of all ages to join them; no auditions are required. Rehearsals for the choir’s holiday season performance begin Sept. 3, 6:30-8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 SW Dorion Ave.

Although founded in 2012, Carlson said the choir has mostly been on hiatus since 2020. Its mission is to learn and perform a variety of choral repertoire, from ancient to contemporary, while striving for musical polish and beauty in a positive and supportive atmosphere.

A longtime holiday tradition presented by the Oregon East Symphony, the music festival is Dec. 8 at the Vert Auditorium, Pendleton. OES Executive Director J.D. Kindle describes it as “an ecumenical celebration of the holiday season through song” featuring various community musical ensembles.

BAKER CITY — Four days of film are in store for Baker City during the 15th annual We Like ‘Em Short film festival, Aug. 22-25 at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St.

Films were submitted from 31 countries around the globe, and more than 70 were accepted into the festival, said Brian Vegter, festival director.

There will be five screenings: 8 p.m. Aug. 22 (drive-in style in the parking lot); 7 p.m. Aug. 23; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 24; and 6 p.m. Aug. 25. Each screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with guest filmmakers.

Cruise to Enterprise for classic car fun

ENTERPRISE — The 10th annual Main Street Show and Shine cruises into town for two days of classic car fun.

The weekend starts at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at Main Street Motors to register and pick up goodie bags. Entry is $20.

New this year is the Cruise to Flora in memory of Don Ward, a local car enthusiast. Participants can meet at the Cloverleaf Hall parking lot on Highway 3 at noon on Friday, Aug. 16. Those who cruise will be entered into a raffle drawing for cash prizes.

On Saturday, Aug. 17, Main Street in Enterprise will be filled with cars and trucks for spectators to see. Parking starts at 7 a.m. Car show awards will be announced at 2:30 p.m. After the ceremony, everyone is encouraged to cruise by the Enterprise and Joseph assisted living homes.

Take a stroll downtown for the wine walk

BAKER CITY — Baker City Downtown’s monthly wine walk is Thursday, Aug. 15 from 5-7 p.m. It begins at Hatch, 2019 Main St., and a $12 donation gets a BCD logo wine glass and map of participating businesses. A portion of the evening’s profits will be donated to Best Friends of Baker, a local animal rescue organization.

In addition, D’Club L’Eveque will play live at Royal Artisan, 1912 Main St.

Catch a concert every Thursday

ENTERPRISE — The Courthouse Concert Series continues on Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m. at the Wallowa County Courthouse, 101 S. River St. Attendance is free, and this series is sponsored by the Wallowa Valley Music Alliance.

This month includes Jenny Parrott (Aug. 15), The Bad Penny Pleasuremakers (Aug. 22) and Desert Moondogs Band (Aug. 29).

Faith Martin returns to Maxwell Market

HERMISTON — Faith Martin, a Tri-Cities radio personality who finished third in ABC’s inaugural season of “The Golden Bachelor, is returning to the Maxwell Market.

A singer-songwriter, Martin is the former lead vocalist for The Shades and has performed across the Pacific Northwest with Bobby & Faith Acoustic Duo. She will tune up Thursday, Aug. 15, 4-7 p.m. at the Maxwell Siding Event Center & Pavilion, 145 N. First Place.

STANFIELD — Locally grown produce, arts and craft vendors, community booths and a variety of food pod offerings are all featured during the Echo & Stanfield Market.

IRRIGON — Morrow County’s 2024 Music in the Parks crescendoes with One Trick Pony, featuring the hits of Paul Simon, favorite covers of folk duo Simon & Garfunkel, ’70s hits and more.

Michael Trew will perform Monday, Aug. 19, 7 p.m. at Irrigon Marina Park, 430 NE Eighth St. Be prepared for audience participation, as the Seattle musician often leads spirited singalongs. Admission is free.

Luke Bulla plans concert in Pendleton

PENDLETON — Pendleton Center for the Arts, 214 N. Main St., welcomes Luke Bulla in a concert on Thursday, Aug. 22.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 at pendletonarts.org.

Bulla started performing at age 4 and became the youngest person to finish in the top 10 of Nashville’s Grand Master Fiddle Championship at age 10. In the spring of 1999 he moved to Nashville to establish himself as a full-time musician. He spent his early years in Tennessee playing fiddle in Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder, which earned him his first Grammy Award.

Following the Skaggs stint, he became a member of the John Cowan Band. More recently he has performed and/or recorded with Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Russ Barenberg Trio, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs, to name a few. He is currently touring as part of Lyle Lovett’s Large Band.

Catch a movie in the park

PENDLETON — Pendleton Parks and Recreation is again sponsoring Movies in the Park on Fridays through August. Each evening begins at 7:30 p.m. at Community Park with pre-movie activities such as kickball, cornhole, flag football and concessions with popcorn, soda, candy and more.

Planned movies are “Hook” (Aug. 16) and “Migration” (Aug. 23).

Work sought for Art at the Crossroads

BAKER CITY — The 26th annual Art at the Crossroads regional show opens Sept. 6 at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center. This show is open to artists ages 18 and older, and all media types are welcome. Work will be accepted until Sept. 3. This year’s judge is Nika Blasser. For information, visit crossroads-arts.org.

Cash prizes will be awarded, including the $1,000 Barbara Wilbur Family Fund Award for the category of “Abstraction,” which will recognize “non-representational/abstract work emphasizing exceptional use of line, form and color,” according to a press release.

The award honors the late Barbara Wilbur, whose family donated a gift of $10,000 to ensure a $1,000 award is given at the September show for 10 years.

Park music finishes with Brass Fire Band

PENDLETON — Get ready for a sizzling performance as Brass Fire Band performs during Wednesdays in the Park.

Featuring musicians from across the region, the band plays horn-fueled covers from the Big Band era and rock from the 1970s and ‘80s. They will perform Wednesday, Aug. 21, 6-8 p.m. at Roy Raley Park, 1205 SW Court Ave. Local food vendors and a beer/wine garden will be available.
