Big sound in a tiny town

HALFWAY — Pine Fest, the annual two-day music festival in Halfway, will open the gates for its 11th festival Sept. 6-7 at the Pine Valley Fairgrounds.

“With non-stop music, food and beverage vendors on site and camping available at the fairgrounds, Pine Fest has become an annual tradition for music lovers who appreciate the casual, uncrowded atmosphere together with the rocking, dance party vibe the event is known for,” said Steve Backstrom, who organizes the festival.

This year’s lineup features Portland-based guitar wizard Terry Robb playing a rare electric set backed by area musicians Luke McKern and Mark Emerson.

Jelly Bread, the get-up-and-dance funk/rock/R&B powerhouse from Reno, will return to the festival for the first time in five years.

“It’s almost impossible to stay seated once Jelly Bread starts rocking the fairgrounds,” Backstrom said.

Kristen Grainger and True North, who Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Kate McKenzie described as “the perfect modern bluegrass band” will make their first-ever appearance at Pine Fest.

Popular La Grande-based duo Bag of Hammers, another Pine Fest favorite, will be back on the big stage to entertain with their renditions of popular tunes from a range of genres.

Between acts on the big, rented stage, local performers will keep the crowd engaged from the smaller, permanent stage on the fairgrounds.

Tickets and camping reservations are available via the Pine Fest website at www.pinefest.org and can also be purchased at the gate, which opens at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. Tickets are $25 for Friday and $30 for Saturday.

Music starts at 4 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
