- Dancers come from near and far to participate in Day of Dance, an event on Sept. 21 organized by Crossroads Carnegie Art Center at Geiser-Pollman Park in Baker City.
BAKER CITY — National Dance Day is Sept. 21, and Crossroads Carnegie Art Center will celebrate by hosting a Day of Dance celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Geiser-Pollman Park.
The day, which celebrates dance in many forms, is funded by the Starseed Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation including the Edna Harrell Fund, Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative and community members who donated and/or joined the spring 1980s dance party fundraiser in March, said Ginger Savage, executive director of Crossroads.
Admission is a suggested donation of $5, which will be used as a local match for grant applications to host a dance event in 2025.
Also, Crossroads will have a raffle at the Sept. 21 event to win a variety of donated items. Tickets are $5 for seven.
Performers
The Day of Dance will feature a variety of dancers and styles.
Magda Flores will lead Baker City dancers to present Mexican skirt dancing, and Next Level Dancing from Halfway will also perform.
Cielo Schacht will present a Columbian dance, followed by a fusion dance and then Paula Benintendi will lead line dancing.
Groups from the Boise area include Irish Dance Idaho, Indo Idaho, Danza Azteca Tonatiuh, Boise Traditional Chinese Dance Group, Wakandeez (African Hip-Hop) and Flow Arts (fire dance).
Square dancers will participate from Weiser, Idaho, and James Dionne from Ontario will present a Native American dance.
Also, Kathy Sanchez will lead a group of local dancers called the Groovin’ Grannies.
Other activities
Food and drink vendors will be onsite at the park, and Baker Heritage Museum will be celebrating National Museum Day with free admission across Grove Street from the park.
“Please bring your chair or blanket to enjoy the day,” Savage said.
In case of rain, the performance will be held in the Baker Heritage Museum ballroom.
