Your Hogwarts letter is coming…

PENDLETON — Hogwarts letters will arrive from Pendleton this fall.

The Pendleton Public Library will mail out the letters in early October for anyone who registers for their adult programs, which are tied to classes from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The programs will include real lessons or real activities but also be linked with a Hogwarts class, such as learning about self-defense for “Defense Against the Dark Arts” and tarot cards for “divination.”

“We are excited to offer a multi-month Harry Potter Program for adults. Our previous children’s events centering on the series have been extremely popular, we are hoping to achieve the same success through adult offerings,” Library Director Jennifer Johnson said. “We have a great line up of presenters and activities to share with the public. I myself am excited to visit Blue Mountain Wildlife for the owl demonstration.”

The programs stretch from October through March with two programs planned each month.

Anyone interested in learning more about the classes — and receiving some freebies — is encouraged to attend the Hogwarts Registration kickoff event on Sept. 28, 5 p.m., at the library, 502 SW Dorion Ave.

During the kickoff event, participants can pick up school supplies like mini cauldrons and quills, participate in a flying key craft activity and take photos with a special backdrop. A presentation during the event will highlight the classes, and visitors will be able to register for events.

All programs are free.

Everyone who registers for at least one class by Oct. 2 — whether registering during the kickoff or at the front desk of the library — and provides their address will receive a Hogwarts acceptance letter in the mail, complete with the list of classes.

Those who select their Hogwarts house will also compete for the house cup by attending classes and earning points, and the series will conclude with a graduation ceremony in the spring.

Although the program has a Harry Potter theme, each class is designed to appeal to wizards and muggles alike.

“I think this is a great fit for Harry Potter fans, but even if you aren’t into the series you might be intrigued by some of the offerings. For example, tarot card readings, astronomy and chemistry for adults are all things we are trying for the first time,” Johnson said.
