Tour art studios Oct. 5 in Baker City

BAKER CITY, HAINES — Several local artists will open their studios this on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a self-guided tour. All are in Baker City, unless otherwise noted:

  • Quail Crossing Studio, 645 Third St., Haines: Visit with Becky Litke (painting and pastels) and Sherri Linnemeyer (painting and collage). This studio will stay open until 4 p.m.
  • Tom Novak, painter, 3320 Broadway St., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Anders Gallery, 1802 Main St., with Robert Anders (painter, bronze, printer). Open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave.: Visit with Ann Eriksmoen (watercolor, pencils), Vicki Maddox (watercolor, pastels), Teresa Stearns Uriarte (photography), Linda Elliot (handmade jewelry), as well as Kirsten Badger, Alethea Brewer and additional artists in the pottery studio.

Get your scare on at the Haunted Warehouse

IMBLER — Night Fright Productions is back with a “Toy Store Possession” haunted warehouse at 410 Railroad Ave. in Imbler.

Scares start Oct. 4 and continue every Friday and Saturday in October, plus Halloween night, from 7-10 p.m. Cost is $18. For updates, check the Facebook page for Night Fright Haunted House.

Taylor Pumpkin Patch harvests fun in Boardman

BOARDMAN — Agri-tourism activities have sprouted in recent years at the Taylor Pumpkin Patch, 79115 Root Lane — and the 2024 season opens Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Activities include a corn maze, a pair of corn pits, apple slingshots, a pumpkin cannon, a haybale maze and pyramid, a haunted house and a zip line. Also, hay rides are available Friday through Sunday. Also, select the perfect pumpkin from more than 100 varieties.

Hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 3:30 p.m. to dusk; and Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Entry is $5; children under 3 are free. There is an additional fee for the zip line and fire pit rentals.

Special events run from 6-9 p.m., including Wine Night (Oct. 19), Bro’s, Brats, Brews (Oct. 26) and the Haunted Maze (Oct. 25-26).

Head downtown for Taste of Baker Oct. 5

BAKER CITY — It’s time to munch your way down Main Street during Taste of Baker on Saturday, Oct. 5, 4-7 p.m. in downtown Baker City.

As many as 1,500 people attend this annual festival to taste sample-sized entrees from local eateries. And your cash is no good — food and drinks must be purchased with tokens.

You will, however, need money to purchase the tokens, which are available in advance at Ryder Bros., The Cheese Fairy and Charlie’s Deli in Baker City, and at Elkhorn Media Group in La Grande.

Presale tokens are cash only and sold in bundles of 20 for $25 or 100 for $125.

Tokens purchased downtown during the event (cash or card) are $1.25 each, 20 for $25 or 100 for $125.

This year brings 38 vendors to the event, and menu items range in price from one to five tokens.

Maxwell Market’s finale features funk duo

HERMISTON — The final Maxwell Market of the 2024 season features entertainment by Tiphony Dames and Robin Barrett.

The funk duo will perform Thursday, Oct. 3, 4-7 p.m. at the Maxwell Siding Event Center & Pavilion, 145 N. First Place. Market-goers can shop for produce and the wares of local arts and craft vendors, as well as enjoy beer and food.

Harvest festival plows into 11th year

BOARDMAN — The 11th annual Morrow County Harvest Festival plows into the SAGE Center on Saturday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 101 Olson Road.

The event features various vendors with high-quality, regionally-produced agricultural goods and handmade artisan crafts. The family-friendly festival also includes pumpkin painting, craft activities, face painting, mule-drawn wagon rides and live music. Also, food trucks will be onsite.

Threemile Canyon Farms is again teaming up with the Harvest Bounty for Youth in Agriculture. For a small donation, festival-goers can take home a bag of locally-grown produce.

Adams cooks up chili contest, harvest event

ADAMS — The Adams Friends Association is seeking chili cooks for its Halloween Harvest Party.

Participants will compete in four categories, vegetarian, spice of the night, best classic chili and best all-around chili. Spots are limited; register via bit.ly/3XQSE6f. There is no entry fee to participate.

Suzy Bogguss to perform at Wildhorse

MISSION — Award-winning country singer-songwriter Suzy Bogguss will perform Nov. 2, 7 p.m. in the Rivers Event Center at Wildhorse Resort & Casino.

She’s known for such hits as “Hey Cinderella,” “Aces,” “Drive South” and “Outbound Plane.” General reserved are $49 and only a handful of premium reserved seats ($59) are still available. The show is open to adults 21 and older.

Bogguss received the top new female vocalist in 1989 from the Academy of Country Music and the Horizon Award in 1992 from the Country Music Association. Her 2023 album, “Prayin’ for Sunshine,” is said to offer a “mix of southern storytelling, gorgeous vocals and organic instrumentation that showcases her country and Americana roots.”

Enjoy the season at a fall festival

MILTON-FREEWATER — Everyone is invited to the Milton-Freewater Neighborhood Fall Festival Oct. 4-5 at 102 S. Main St. Festivities are from 1-6 p.m. Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kids of all ages can enjoy painting pumpkins and rocks, or having their faces painted. There will be free carnival games and prizes for kids; along with jute sack races. And, of course, a bounce house.

There will be local food vendors or enjoy a pulled pork dinner on Friday night from 4-6 p.m., an Angus beef chili lunch on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and hot dog dinners for the kids.

Free concert features violin compositions

WALLA WALLA — Violinist Martessa Davis and pianist Jan Roberts will perform during the First Thursday Concert Series in Walla Walla.

“Moments with Martessa” features violin compositions of 19th and 20th century. The free concert is Thursday, Oct. 3, 12:15-12:45 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 323 Catherine St. The public is invited to bring a bag lunch and enjoy the music. Although the event is free, donations will be accepted for Rogers Adventist School.

Get your tickets now for Pumpkin Chunkin’

BAKER CITY — Ever wanted to toss a pumpkin from a helicopter?

Your chance is coming to do just that, and raise money for a local foundation at the same time.

The annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ Bash is Oct. 26 at the Baker City Municipal Airport. Tickets are available now for $50 (pumpkins provided). There are only 400 available — purchase tickets at Baker Aircraft (at the airport, 43769 Heilner Drive) and Grumpy’s Repair, 225 H St.

This fundraiser supports the Spc. Mabry James Anders Memorial Foundation, which provides scholarships to local students. The foundation honors Anders, the Baker City man who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2012.

The day runs from noon to 5 p.m. at the airport. And it’s not just about smashing pumpkins — the foundation will be selling food, and beverages will be available from Barley Brown’s Brewpub and Brewin’ with D. Anna Beetz will provide the music.

Still time to see ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’

ELGIN — A world of pure imagination awaits theatergoers with “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at the Elgin Opera House, 104 N. Eighth Ave.

Based on the works of Roald Dahl, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is a revised Broadway musical that adds to the content from the 1971 movie, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

Exhibit highlights Oregon’s Black history

PENDLETON — An exhibition focusing on Oregon’s Black history will be on display during regular business hours Oct. 5 through Nov. 2 at the Pendleton Public Library, 502 SW Dorion Ave.

In addition, a special program featuring Mariah Rocker, public programs and exhibits manager of Oregon Black Pioneers, is Saturday, Oct. 5, 11 a.m. at the Blue Mountain Community College library, 2411 NW Carden Ave. She will present “450 Years in 45 Minutes,” which highlights key individuals and events that characterize Oregon’s Black history.

Catch jazz at the Josephy Center

JOSEPH — On Saturday, Oct. 5, Grammy-nominated saxophonist Dan Schauffler will perform an evening of jazz with a collection of some of the Northwest’s most accomplished and exciting jazz musicians: guitarist Chuck Everett, bassist Pete Lampfe and percussionist Carl Smith.

LA GRANDE — Community Kindness of Eastern Oregon is revealing its “Men of Union County” calendar at a celebratory event held at the Cavern, their event room at 1315 Adams Ave. The event will include snacks, mimosas and a presentation to tell stories about each model’s experience.

This is the organization’s major fundraiser and proceeds benefit scholarships for local youth and a youth training program.

Oktoberfest celebrates German heritage

PENDLETON — It’s time to dig out your lederhosen and dirndls for Oktoberfest Pendleton Oct. 12, 2-9 p.m. at Happy Canyon Arena.

It features food, merchandise vendors, live music and family fun. Also, people can raise a stein with more than two dozen varieties of beer, cider and hard seltzer.

In its eighth year, the event raises money for college scholarships and grants to local nonprofit organizations. A basket raffle has been added to this year’s fundraising effort.

Boardman pieces together 16th annual quilt show

BOARDMAN — The 16th annual Boardman Quilt Show is Oct 11-12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Boardman Senior Center, 100 Tatone St. Admission is $5 and children under 12 are free. Also, a potato bar lunch and desserts will be available for purchase.

The two-day event is presented by the Boardman Quilt Club. It will feature family heritage quilts and quilts created by people from throughout the region. Prizes will be presented for the people’s choice award and top youth quilts.
