Get a chill at Churchill Haunted Studios

BAKER CITY — Corrine Vegter loves haunted houses.

“I made my bedroom into a haunted house when I was a kid and made my family go through it,” she said.

Now she has much more space to creative a spooky experience in the basement rooms of Churchill School, where she works all year on the Haunted Studios.

“I spent many, many hours without seeing daylight,” she said with a smile.

Although she knows the scares will make people move through at a quick pace, she hopes visitors will take some time to look at the artistic elements.

“I want people to see the creativity — take time to slow down and actually look at things,” she said.

She does this at other haunted houses.

“When I got to a haunted house, all my friends are done before me,” she said.

The Churchill experience could take up to 30 minutes, she said.

Of course, that doesn’t account for those pesky actors who are trying to scare you.

“It’s pretty scary,” she said.

The Haunted Studios are open every Friday and Saturday in October, plus Halloween, from 6:30-8 p.m.

Tours are limited to six people at a time. Tickets are $13 in advance at churchillbaker.com, or $18 at the door.

Vegter has a closet full of costumes and each year a group of volunteers help bring the haunted house to life. While many actors are local, some years have included musicians who played at Churchill and returned just to take part in the haunted house.

Actors are posted throughout the rooms, which include such themes as vampire, doll, circus, forest and spider (you have to walk through a hallway with fake spiderwebs — good luck not squirming).

Although she keeps some elements from year to year, she redesigns and rearranges for each new season.

“I usually add, subtract, do something different,” she said.

This is the fifth year she’s staged the Haunted Studios. A new addition is a seven-minute film by Deb Ether lends a haunting aura to the experience.

And there may, or may not, be someone lurking around the corner.
