Haunt Camp, Fishtrap seek spooky stories for Oct. 25 event

ENTERPRISE — Haunt Camp and Fishtrap, the Enterprise-based writers’ organization, have issued a call for people to submit spooky stories suitable to be read aloud during a Halloween-themed event in Enterprise.

The stories — fiction or nonfiction — should be short enough to be read aloud in less than five minutes.

But a deadline looms like a zombie outside a bedroom window: To be considered for the event, stories must be submitted by Oct. 21.

The “Spooky Story Slam” is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 at Cloverleaf Hall, 600 NW First St. in Enterprise. It’s meant to replace this year’s Haunt Camp — the annual event in which students create built-from-scratch haunted houses.

Haunt Camp participants were working to build an all-new haunted house for this season, until a windstorm on Oct. 5 extensively damaged the sets being built outdoors on a vacant lot near downtown Enterprise.

JR Rymut, the founder and lead instructor for Haunt Camp, examined the damage and sadly determined that the show, as originally planned, could not go on.

“This windstorm took us out,” Rymut said. The sets “just got ripped apart because they’re not made for exposure to any kind of serious storm.”

But Rymut and her Haunt Camp charges, with a hand from Fishtrap, pivoted to create the “Spooky Story Slam” for Oct. 25.

Rymut said a smaller number of salvageable sets will be moved into the hall to serve as the backdrop for the evening of spooky readings — enhanced with a sprinkling of theatrical sound and light effects.

The first half of the evening will be devoted to classic tales of terror (although not too terrifying, because the event is intended to be family-friendly.)

In the second half, finalists will read their original stories to a panel of judges, which will award prizes.
