WESTON — Stop by Weston on Saturday, Oct. 26, for a fun time during the Potato Show and Fall Festival.

Festivities start at 9 a.m. and go until 4 p.m. Attendees will find lunch featuring — what else? — potatoes, a book sale, vendors, bingo and a raffle to benefit the Athena-Weston School District.

This is the 103rd annual potato show and is held at the Weston Memorial Hall, 210 E. Main St., next to the post office.

The Weston Memorial Hall, historically named the Weston Opera House, was built between 1895-1900 and was relocated 1918-1920. It is a contributing resource in the Weston Commercial Historic District, which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. At the time it was moved, the building was dedicated as a memorial to Weston’s World War I veterans.

An old-fashioned country fair was started in the early 1920s by the Weston Mountain Potato Growers Association. It became an annual event with area growers competing for prizes with the many varieties of table and seed potatoes. Later it became a show with exhibits of canned and baked foods, needlework, other fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The show is now sponsored by the Weston Chamber of Commerce. There are exhibits of home-grown fruits and vegetables, flowers, home canning, arts and crafts, home baking, needlework and youth entries. Vendors have crafts and food for sale, information booths and more.

Book sale

The Potato Show is also a chance to stock up on reading material at a book sale offered by the Friends of the Weston Library.

Library Director Heather Culley said the event is the group’s largest fundraiser of the year.

“It is also the best opportunity for people to buy quality books and media at rock bottom prices,” she said.

A special of $1 per bag is featured during the last hour of the sale.

In addition, the library is hosting a tour of the Weston Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Patterned after Pendleton’s popular Quiet Neighbors cemetery tour, Culley said the program will feature six historical figures from Weston and information about the symbolism at the cemetery. She said the tour is approximately an hour.
