- The Southfork Grange in Lostine is offering various classes, such as this fermentation workshop held this summer. The next event is a recipe cook-off on Oct. 25.
LOSTINE — Big things are happening in the little building that houses Southfork Grange #605 on Roswell Street in Lostine.
So big, in fact, that it is spilling over onto the main street and beyond.
Although the inaugural 2024 Farmers Market season has come to an end, they are looking forward to 2025 and the Southfork Grange’s calendar is filling up with classes and events providing opportunities for folks in the community to learn traditional skills, connect with one another and support this organization.
Their Generations Project, now in its second year, provides classes, workshops and programs for all ages. Funded by Soroptimist International of Wallowa County and grants from other local organizations, the Grange’s project focuses on family sustainability, promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging the members of the county to join them in celebrating local agriculture, community and traditional practices.
Recently, the grange held its second Generations Project class on fermentation. This well-attended, multi-generational, hands-on class was expertly taught by June Colony, vice president, and Jenny Hawkins, lecturer. Participants went home with knowledge, a loaf of bread and a few jars of locally grown fermenting vegetables.
As with this, many classes are free and open to all county residents; all ages are encouraged to attend.
