- Eastern Oregon University students had the unique opportunity to learn from master musicians as the music department hosted Bamako Foli, an ensemble from Mali, West Africa, on Oct. 29, 2024. EOU’s African Drumming Ensemble will perform Friday, Nov. 8, at EOU.
LA GRANDE — Eastern Oregon University’s music department presents its annual fall concert on Friday, Nov. 8, 7:30 p.m., in McKenzie Theater on the EOU campus.
EOU’s 45th Parallel takes the stage for a fun night with jazz-rock fusion. This dynamic genre combines jazz with rock, funk, pop, hip-hop and electronic music, and the student musicians are ready to push the musical boundaries by using the improvisational spirit of jazz.
Under the direction of Greg Johnson, 45th Parallel is excited to share a wide variety of tunes from various musical artists like Herbie Hancock, Al Green & Teenie Hodges, The Beatles, Snarky Puppy and Chris Cornwall. The concert features solos on guitar, keyboard and saxophone.
EOU’s African Drumming Ensemble, led by Luke McKern, will also be performing at the concert, along with the Global Rhythms class that he teaches. This ensemble is focused on traditional drumming songs using instruments such as the djembe, dundumba, sangba and kenkeni to create beautiful rhythmic pieces.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to support music foundation scholarships.
