- At the monthly Community Art Studio event at Art Center East, students can work on any number of art projects like this one, cyanotype cards, by Gloria Cropp. Artists can bring their projects to the studio and work on them in the company of other artisans. The studio is open Dec. 11. Register with Art Center East.
A new monthly event called Community Art Studio is being held at Art Center East, 1006 Penn Ave., for anyone who would like to work on an art project.
The next event is Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the basement studio, which is accessible from the Fifth Street entrance. The facilitator is Gloria Cropp, a retired nurse and an artist who enjoys watercolors and other media.
“I’m committed to being available in the studio so that people can come and utilize it,” Cropp said. “I bring my own art project, which was one of the impetuses for me getting involved this way.”
Like Cropp, many people don’t have dedicated time set aside to work on their projects or they don’t have the space at home to accommodate their project materials, so having a community art studio where others can gather, socialize and work on their individual projects seemed to be a good solution.
“We’re defining art pretty loosely,” she said.
If someone just wanted to come and sketch or had purchased a make-and-take craft project from the art center but didn’t have the space at home to do it, then the community art studio will provide the space they need. For example, one person is working on an oil painting, Cropp said, but she didn’t want to do it by herself at home. The center offers her space for a small fee of $5, which provides an opportunity to work on it in company with others. While there, participants also discover other programs and classes offered through Art Center East.
Cropp said it’s a gathering place for like-minded people with some sort of art to work on, and it’s an opportunity to socialize, be active, converse, learn new things and get out of the house. Art projects may include many media. There are no limits.
“It may be fiber art, drawing, painting, embroidery, sewing, and they want to do it in the company of other people,” she said.
The community art studio has room for a maximum of 12 participants per event date. Those interested can register through Art Center East by calling 541-624-2800.
