BAKER CITY — This weekend is one of Baker City’s busiest of the year, but be sure to head downtown to see new shows for the First Friday art walk on Dec. 6.
Anders Gallery
1802 Main St.
Anders Gallery will showcase original oil paintings by regional artist George Keister during First Friday from 4-8 p.m.
Crossroads Carnegie Art Center
2020 Auburn Ave.
Join Crossroads Carnegie Art Center on Dec. 6 from 5-8 p.m. for “Christmas at Crossroads” featuring ornaments, paintings, clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, mixed media, jewelry, small sculptures, holiday cards and more.
The evening’s music will be provided by Hot Buzz Jambo. Also, visitors can enter a drawing to win a gift certificate to the Eltrym Theater.
Royal Artisan
1912 Main St.
Royal Artisan will exhibit the Monday Artists Group, which includes 10 local artists who mostly work in watercolors. The show opens at 5 p.m.
D’Club L’Eveque will play live music for the opening reception.
Churchill Hall Pass Gallery
3451 Broadway St.
Churchill will feature two artists — Christopher Hobson and Carrie Bellinger — starting Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Bellinger has lived in Mt. Vernon for more than 30 years.
“Shortly after moving here I took painting lessons from local artist Patricia Ross,” she said.
She’s painted with oils, pastels and acrylic.
“I wanted to try something different several years ago and started painting faces, having fun with color and collage,” she said.
Hobson will show his acrylic paintings “that transport viewers to surreal realms while holding onto familiar roots.”
He describes his work as featuring “striking desert landscapes reminiscent of his hometown with the whimsical elegance of flamingoes — a nod to iconic imagery like the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.”
The universal message, he said, is “Be yourself no matter where you are.”
Hobson’s family moved to Baker City when he was 6.
“My parents ran a flower nursery outside our home and an art gallery and coffee shop inside,” he said. “Art has always been a way to connect with this community.”
Baker Food Co-op
2008 Broadway St.
The Co-op will feature pottery by Dori Kite on Dec. 6 from 4-7 p.m.
Sweet Wife Baking
2028 Main St.
Sweet Wife will feature works by mother-daughter duo Jennifer Godwin and Abbey Prevot from 5-8 p.m.
Godwin enjoyed art from an early age, and encouragement from adults fueled her artistic endeavors.
“I had a teacher in fifth grade that praised a drawing. That stuck with me,” she said.
Godwin taught art at Pine Eagle High School in Halfway until retiring in 2005. She now lives in Baker City. She’ll show acrylic landscapes and abstracts at Sweet Wife.
Prevot grew up in Halfway, and taught art at Pine Eagle for five years after her mom retired. She now teaches art at Pendleton High School.
She’ll show her landscapes, many painted with egg tempera, an ancient technique of creating paint with pigment and egg yolks. Prevot and Godwin learned this technique at an Iconography Institute in Mount Angel.
