- Heritage Lights is open Fridays and Saturdays, 5-7 p.m., through Dec. 21 at Heritage Station Museum in Pendleton.
PENDLETON — A holiday tradition lights up the Heritage Station Museum each year in Pendleton, and this year will be no exception.
Heritage Lights and Artisan Market returns to the museum, 108 SW Frazer, from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 13, 14, 20 and 21. An annual event, staff and volunteers fill the museum grounds each December with more than 20,000 lights, big and small.
The exhibits begin with holiday trees set to music outside the front of the building and stretch all the way through to the back corner of the museum grounds.
This year, the favorite exhibits will return. Also, the museum will debut a brand-new feature.
“We’re keeping it a surprise, but the kids are going to love it,” Executive Director Shannon Gruenhagen said.
Gruenhagen said she started the event because she has fond memories of enjoying similar lighted displays as a child. Also, she said it gives families a low-cost holiday experience.
“I wanted to do something downtown that could be a holiday tradition that didn’t cost families much,” she said. “The museum is a community space, and I really want people to see it that way.”
Admission to Heritage Lights is free, but a box will be set up to accept donations. Gruenhagen said donations are appreciated and the money is utilized for repairs and maintenance to keep the event running each year. Families can also help support Heritage Station Museum and the Umatilla County Historical Society by shopping in the museum gift shop.
“The gift shop has all brand new inventory,” Gruenhagen said.
Also new this year, the Umatilla County Historical Society will sell warm, candied nuts — pecans, cashews and almonds — during Heritage Lights. And inside the building, the Artisan Market will feature everything from baked goods to yarn creations.
Vendor spots are full, and visitors will find a number of gifts and treasures available for purchase before or after enjoying the lights.
Also returning this year, Heritage Lights will welcome two special guests: Santa will be on-site during all four events, and The Grinch will make appearances on Dec. 14, 20 and 21. On Dec. 14, both characters will arrive on vehicles direct from Pendleton’s lighted parade.
Those visiting Heritage Lights should also make sure to dress for the weather.
