Plan now for summer fiddle camp

WALLOWA — Summer may seem far off, but registration is now open for the 2025 Wallowa Fiddle Tunes Camp, a program of the Wallowa Valley Music Alliance.

And there’s an early bird discount, too.

The family-friendly fiddle camp turns 20 years old in 2025. Camp dates are July 6-11 at the Wallowa School in Wallowa.

For two decades, the camp has drawn accomplished music instructors, who provide group instruction to musicians of all levels. Although it is a fiddle camp, instruction on other instruments such as bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele and English concertina is sometimes offered.

Multi-instrumental class offerings allow greater learning experiences and opportunities for all students through group participation, jamming and learning to play in a string band.

The camp experience typically includes community dances, performances and opportunities to improve singing skills and dance skills.

And food.

“We all eat very well with lunches provided by great local business Z’s BBQ,” said Robyn Burns, camp director.

She said the summer camp offers multiple opportunities for musicians to play together.

“The goal of many musicians is to play well with others,” she said. “Our camp provides opportunities for this in the classroom, in the many extracurricular classes or in the evening around a campsite. One of our goals is to teach and encourage musicians of all levels and ages to build their own musical communities at home.”

The current list of instructors includes Andy Emert, Kate Lichtenstein, Jackie Sites, Joe Sites, John Weed, Carla Arnold, Matt Bell, Richard Melling, Duane Boyer, Amy Fairchild and Harvey Neuber. Several instructors will be added in the coming weeks.

Class offerings and camp details are available at the Wallowa Valley Music Alliance website.
