JOSEPH — The Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, in partnership with the Nez Perce Wallowa Homeland, will again celebrate deep winter with music and movement at the third annual Josephy Fest on Feb. 21 and 22 at the Josephy Center, 403 N. Main St.
Friday night
Friday evening at 7 p.m., Wallowa County musician Darrell Brann will perform an acoustic blues session, followed at 8 p.m. by Sondra Segundo, composer, music producer and vocalist for the band Khu.éex’.
Headlining the evening at 9 p.m. is The Depot Street Syncopators, an 11-piece New Orleans-style funk, Latin, jazz and blues band. Based in La Grande, many members are Eastern Oregon University professors or alumni, well known for their swinging, horn-heavy performance of party-time tunes.
Saturday evening
On Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m., the all-indigenous lineup includes the highly celebrated 10-time world champion jingle dancer, Acosia Red Elk (Umatilla), and River Medicine will bring the songs and prayers of the Cayuse and Nimiipuu to the stage.
Closing the evening will be the Indigenous band Khu.éex’ with members of the Tlingit, Haida and Blackfoot tribes. Their improvisational style explores jazz and funk/rock through music and storytelling from their indigenous perspective. Khu.éex’ recently performed at Seattle’s Earshot Jazz Festival and will soon release a full-length documentary that shares their story.
