LA GRANDE — Are you interested in fossils and learning about what Oregon was like millions of years ago? Fossils of Oregon will be at Cook Memorial Library, 2006 Fourth St., on Saturday, April 12, at 10 a.m.

Led by expert Brian Magnier, the program features a brief 15-20 minute presentation, followed by an interactive session with real fossils and an opportunity to ask questions about fossils, paleontology and local geology. While this program is open to the public, it will be of most interest to elementary school-aged children.

The Spells & Stars Book Club meets Saturday, April 19 at 3 p.m. The book up for discussion is “The Measure,” by Nikki Erlick. New members are welcome. This book club meets the third Saturday of each month. Copies of the book are available through interlibrary loan.

“The Inbetweens” for ages 9-12 meets April 30, 4 p.m., and continues the last Wednesday of each month. It features silly debates, writing prompts, book talks, and more. No registration is required.

The EOU Community Writing Center open hours have changed to Wednesdays from 2-4 p.m. in April. EOU student tutors are available for help with resumes, cover letters, essays and other text-based projects for school, creative writing, editorials and other public writing.

The Center for Human Development offers “Art Out Loud,” an art program for ages 5-17, where kids can explore and express their feelings and experiences through creating art. This free group is held on Fridays, from 3-4 p.m. in the Community Room. Contact Bobbye Guentert at 541-962- 8800 for more information. Art Out Loud won’t be held on April 11 or 24.

Betty Feves spring exhibit features artist/educators

PENDLETON — The spring term exhibition at the Betty Feves Memorial Gallery features the works of Charlene Liu, Isami Ching and Mika Aono — all are accomplished artists and educators with national and international recognition.

The exhibit opens Thursday, April 10, and continues until June 5. A free public reception will be Friday, April 18, 4-6 p.m. in the gallery, located in Pioneer Hall on the BMCC campus, 2411 NW Carden Ave. Liu and Ching will participate in an artist’s talk at 5 p.m. Food and drinks will be served.

The trio worked together at the University of Oregon, where Liu (professor/printmaking coordinator) and Ching (senior instructor of art) continue to teach, while Aono (master printer and print studio technician) moved to Portugal several years ago and founded a printmaking studio.

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

Enjoy classical music April 13 in Enterprise

ENTERPRISE — The Wallowa Valley Music Alliance’s second classical concert of the season is Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall, 105 NE First St.

Admission is free. The series is supported by the Wallowa County Cultural Trust Coalition and The Roundhouse Foundation.

The April concert features music for violin, cello and piano with Lisa Robertson (Enterprise), Ed Dixon (Walla Walla) and James Cook (Boise) plus “four-hands” compositions for piano performed by James and Ruth Cook.

The final concert in the mini-series is June 15. It will feature Fourtissimo, a professional brass quartet from Washington. For more information, visit wvmusicalliance.org/classical-2025.

Hermiston Spring Bazaar seeks vendors

HERMISTON — Calling all craftspersons, artisans, home-based business owners and more — the Hermiston Spring Bazaar is seeking vendors.

The event is May 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hermiston Community Center, 415 S. Highway 395. Vendor space ranges from $50-$100.

Catch live music in La Grande this weekend

LA GRANDE — The TooBamBoo Trio will play live at The Depot, 10 Depot St., on Saturday, April 12, from 8-10 p.m.

The trio features Al “Too Loud” MacLeod on guitar and vocals, Greg “BamBoo” Johnson on sax and clarinet, and Peggy “Piano” Haney on piano and vocals. TooBamBoo is an Americana country, blues, singer-songwriter, folk rock ‘n’ roll group.

Music, poetry coming to Crossroads

BAKER CITY — Keith Taylor and Whit Deschner are teaming up to provide an evening of piano (Taylor) and poetry (Deschner) on Saturday, April 18, at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave. The event starts at 4:30 p.m.

Admission is free, although donations will support Parkinson’s research at Oregon Health & Science University, which also benefits each year from the Salt Lick fundraiser founded by Deschner. See more in next week’s edition of Go!

Repair Cafe returns to Cook Memorial

LA GRANDE — Head to the Cook Memorial Library Community Room, 2006 Fourth St., on Tuesday, April 15, from 3:30-6 p.m. for the Repair Cafe.

This free event brings the community together to repair broken items like CD players, toasters and even moth-eaten sweaters, with professional advice and hands-on help.

 

Art for everyone planned at Crossroads

BAKER CITY — Dementia Friendly Baker County and Crossroads Carnegie Art Center present Creative Connections, a free art activity for everyone, on Tuesday, April 15, from 1-2:30 p.m. at Crossroads, 2020 Auburn Ave.

This month’s activity is making flower mandalas with Dawn-Marie deLara, as well as flower arranging. Refreshments will be provided. For information, call 541-523-5369.

Grange welcomes the Easter Bunny

JOSEPH — Hurricane Creek Grange, 82930 Airport Way, will have breakfast and pictures with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, April 12. Breakfast is served from 7-11 a.m. and the cost is a suggested donation of $10 for adults, and free for age 12 and younger. An area will be set up for parents to take pictures of children and the Easter Bunny from 8:30-11 a.m.

Feel the beat at Power House Theatre

WALLA WALLA — A unique blend of taiko, Japanese folk dancing, music, artistic movement, and personal stories are featured in an upcoming performance in Walla Walla.

Unit Souzou will take the stage Friday, April 18, 7 p.m. at the Power House Theatre, 111 N. Sixth Ave., Walla Walla. Reserved seats for adults range from $30-$35. Student tickets are $20

Honoring the roots of the taiko (Japanese drumming) art form, Unit Souzou was formed in 2014 by co-directors Michelle Fujii and Toru Watanabe. The pair met at Warabi-za, Japan’s foremost traditional folk dance troupe.

Queensryche to rock Wildhorse

PENDLETON — The progressive metal sounds of Queensryche will blast into Eastern Oregon with a show at Wildhorse Resort & Casino.

The three-time Grammy-nominated band will perform May 27 at 7 p.m. in the Rivers Event Center. The concert is open to ages 21 and older. A cash-only bar will be available.

Organizers expect the show to sell out. Tickets went on sale April 2. Premium reserved seats are $69 and standing room only is $49.

According to a press release, after forming in the Seattle area in the early 1980s, many of the band’s singles landed on the Billboard charts, including “Silent Lucidity, “Eyes of a Stranger” and “Take Hold of the Flame.” Also, four of the band’s albums made Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart.

Put the pieces together for a puzzle contest

BAKER CITY — Do you love puzzles? Showcase your skills at a jigsaw puzzle contest for adults and teens on Saturday, April 26, at the Baker County Public Library, 2400 Resort St. from 2-4 p.m.

This is a team competition with four members. Groups can sign up under a team name, or individuals can register and be assigned to a team at the event. Space is limited to the first 40 who register.

Each team will have two hours to complete a 500-piece puzzle. The first team to finish is the winner.

Yard sale goes to the dogs

HERMISTON — A three-in-one fundraiser featuring a yard sale, can/bottle drive and raffle will benefit Fuzz Ball Animal Rescue.

The benefit event is Saturday, April 19, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 645 E. Sunset Drive. Proceeds will pay for veterinary care for sick and injured stray animals.

Organizers are accepting additional donations for the yard sale. Items can be dropped off in advance or to arrange pickup service, send a message through Facebook via bit.ly/4i2u7lo.

Operated by a small group of volunteers, Fuzz Ball’s primary focus is on sick, injured and stray animals in the Hermiston area. The nonprofit organization arranges housing for animals in a foster-based program.
