JOSEPH — The annual Youth Arts Festival opens Saturday, April 12, at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture. In addition to viewing the art, visitors can complete a make-and-take ceramic project and youths are invited to participate in an open mic session.
The art exhibit runs from April 12-21 and showcases a variety of artwork from local youth artists. The festival, which was first initiated in 1989 by local photographer Doris Woempner, has become a cherished tradition in the Wallowa Valley, according to a press release. Over the years, the event has been shaped by dedicated community supporters, including Joan Madsen, Leah Johnson, Will Roundy and Maria Weer.
The Wallowa Valley Arts Council sponsors the event, along with many volunteers. The 2024 exhibit saw more than 200 entries.
The show opens at noon on April 12 at the center, 403 N. Main St.

Solo or group acts are welcome to perform music, spoken word, comedy, dance or another form of creative performance. No experience is required.
Participants can sign up at noon on April 12 at the center. Spots are limited.
Ceramic ornaments
As part of the opening, visitors can make ceramic ornaments from noon to 3 p.m. for $5. These can be personalized for holidays, or molded into classic shapes and decorated with stamps, textures or patterns. Items will be fired and ready to pick up in one week.
Volunteers needed
Organizers are seeking volunteers to help with the event, including assistance with sorting and hanging artwork on April 9-10. With more than 200 entries expected, extra hands are needed. If you are available to volunteer, email Dionne Vali at programs@josephy.org or call 541-432-0505, Ext. 2.
