The music scene in Union County is as wide and varied as the scenic vistas surrounding it. From the local symphony to metal, rap, classic rock and folk, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Perhaps nothing embodies this spirit more than two local bi-weekly events held for the enjoyment of musicians and the general public alike.
The “Irish Session” hosted by Carla Arnold, a locally renowned musician and music educator, is a delightful community event celebrating traditional Irish and Celtic music. Held every second Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Tap That Growlers, 1106 Adams Ave. in La Grande, this gathering invites musicians to come together and play acoustic instruments like the fiddle, concertina, guitar and tin whistle.
The session emphasizes a moderate tempo, creating a welcoming atmosphere for musicians of varying skill levels. While the event is primarily for the musicians, friends and family are encouraged to attend and enjoy the lively tunes, along with the venue’s savory food and beverages on tap.
This free event not only fosters a sense of community but also serves as a platform for preserving and sharing Irish musical traditions. The informal setting allows participants to connect over their shared love for music while offering an opportunity for listeners to experience the charm of live, traditional Irish tunes.
The Bluegrass/Old Time Jam Session is a lively and welcoming event hosted by the Blue Mountain Old Time Fiddlers Association. Held on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, this gathering is held at Hot Lake Springs Resort, located on Highway 203 in La Grande.
The jam session runs from 4-6 p.m. and invites musicians and music enthusiasts to come together and celebrate the rich traditions of bluegrass and old-time music. With its relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, the event encourages participation from musicians of all skill levels, providing a perfect opportunity for both seasoned players and beginners to connect and share their love for music.
The setting at Hot Lake Springs Resort adds a unique charm to the event, offering a picturesque backdrop for an evening of music and camaraderie. Attendees can enjoy the sounds of traditional string instruments like the banjo, fiddle, guitar and mandolin, which are central to the bluegrass and old-time genres.
