LA GRANDE — Through the dark winter mornings, when ice made sidewalks treacherous, La Grande residents were still able to get their daily steps thanks to a program at Eastern Oregon University.

Walk for Life is a student-run community walking program held Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6:30-8 a.m., at the EOU Fieldhouse.

“There’s free coffee and free healthy snacks,” said Millie Fisher, who assists with the program.

Walk for Life is overseen by Jacqueline Morgan from EOU’s health and human performance department.

Those who attend can walk the indoor track, and have the option of participating in a health assessment each day that includes balance and a “sit to stand” test. Also, participants can learn exercises to do at home with an exercise band and weights, and also take part in an obstacle course.

Prizes of donated gift cards are given to those who attend the program.

“It’s such an awesome community of people,” Fisher said.

Four from EOU assist with the program, and Fisher said community attendance has averaged six to eight regulars.

“We have different activity levels,” she said.

Fisher said the social interaction is an added bonus.

“A laugh is worth a thousand steps,” she said.

Anyone is welcome, however, children must be accompanied by an adult.

“One of the grandmas brought kiddos before they went to school. That was great,” Fisher said. “Our target is anyone who wants to come.”

She said most people walk the track for 45 minutes to an hour, and a few added to their exercise by walking to the Fieldhouse.

Coffee from Sorbenots is provided, and restrooms are available. All you need are walking shoes.

“Come in outside of the cold and make some friends,” Fisher said.

Walk for Life will continue into May. No registration is needed — simply show up and sign the EOU waiver to participate. Also, no animals are allowed.
