HELIX — A visit to a personal glass studio in Helix and working with a known artist are all possible through the “Fusing Glass” outreach class from Pendleton Center for the Arts.
Taught by Nancy Rees Duff, the class is from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.
Katherine Brizendine, PCA coordinator of education and outreach, said she has wanted to offer the program for a long time.
“Nancy has been working with glass and teaching private classes in her studio for many years, Brizendine said. “I’ve always wanted her to teach a class at the PCA where students would be able to learn from a well-known Eastern Oregon glass fusing artist.”
The first of its kind for PCA, the class will begin with an introduction to fusing, including what it is and how it works.
“Students will be shown examples of glasswork and will also look at the various kinds of glass. This includes sheet glass, frit, stringers and powder,” she said. “Once the introduction is complete, students will learn some basic skills like glass cutting, glass bending and learning about the safety that’s involved when working with glass.”
After learning about the process, students will each have a 6-inch by 6-inch plate to create their design. Rees Duff will fire the pieces to be picked up at a later date.
“Students should be prepared to have a meaningful and fun class experience, while also enjoying a beautiful art studio in the countryside,” she said. “Glass work is different than your typical medium — it’s a unique and very cool process. ”
The cost is $45 for PCA members and $50 for nonmembers. Registration is limited.
“If you’ve ever had a curiosity about glass art, this would be a perfect way to dip your toes and see if it’s a good fit,” Brizendine said. “Either way, you’ll walk away with a fun experience under your belt and a beautiful piece of glass art made by you!”
