LA GRANDE — Welcome to the 45th annual La Grande Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to noon on the corner of Fourth Street and Adams Avenue.

This kicks off another great season for shoppers to buy plants, local produce, and hand-crafted items in a festive community setting.

Candi Nielsen has been the market manager for the past three years, and she said that the May 10 market will offer plant starts and flower starts, and a selection of salad mixes, depending on where they are grown.

“There will also be vendors offering arts and crafts, wood-turned bowls, and some food vendors,” Nielsen said.

The criterion for qualifying vendors is that their products must be “something that you had a hand in making or your hands are part of it,” Nielsen said. This would include local authors’ books, artwork, massage therapy, knife sharpening and homemade dog foods.

If you want to become a vendor at the La Grande Farmers’ Market, visit its website at  www.lagrandefarmersmarket.org and click on the link, “apply to be a vendor.”  Leave your email on the Google form so Nielsen can confirm your registration. The 10-foot space rent is $27 on Saturdays plus a one-time annual membership, non-refundable fee of $25. The 10-foot space may be split into halves if a vendor doesn’t need so much room.

The Tuesday Farmers’ Market opens May 13, from 3-6 p.m. at Max Square, and the 10-foot space costs $20.

Double Up Food Bucks is available for SNAP card shoppers, where the market will match up to $20 spent on foods like bread, eggs, fruits and veggies, mushrooms, lemonade, and freeze-dried foods. It does not apply to hot, ready-to-eat deli foods.

Visitors may expect some kind of musical entertainment. On Saturdays Nielsen will have a scheduled band playing for three hours, and Tuesday markets will have independent street performers or local kids’ groups.

For current calendar events, visit www.lagrandefarmersmarket.org and look for special events like Kids’ Day (June 21), Fruit Pie Festival, Fall Harvest Festival, and Salsa Festival.  See the information booth for booth rentals, Double Up Food Bucks tokens and gift certificates.

“I welcome people to our 45th Farmers’ Market season starting May 10,” Nielsen said. “Come down and see what the market has to offer and realize that we will be getting more produce as we go along. Talk to our vendors and see what they are going to have and come back.”
