Some car owners get creative with their classic cars, such as this one dressed to look like Sally from the animated movie “Cars” that was part of the 2023 Baker City Show and Shine. The 2024 event is Saturday, Aug. 17.

BAKER CITY — The classiest weekend of the summer arrives Saturday, Aug. 17 with the annual Baker City Show and Shine in Geiser-Pollman Park.

Gleaming classic cars will be parked along the sidewalks in the park from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and registration is $20.

“Everyone loves our show because it’s in the park,” said Jeron Simmons, one of the show organizers.

In its 32nd year, Simmons hopes to increase participation from last year’s 153.

“I’m hoping for 180 this year,” he said. “We’ve been drawing cars from everywhere.”

A registration form can be downloaded through the Facebook page for Baker City Memory Cruise and then submitted at the park on Saturday. Participants are also welcome to register at the show.

Several special events are planned for participants — a poker walk is happening in downtown Baker City from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the poker run starts at 5 p.m., also in downtown.

Car show awards will be announced at 3 p.m.

In addition to the car show, food and drink vendors will be set up at the park.

Durkee Steak Feed

The annual Durkee Steak Feed again coincides with the classic car show. The dinner is from 4-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Quail Ridge Golf Course, 2801 Indiana Ave., with music by Frank Carlson.

Tickets are $30 for a steak plate or $10 for a hot dog meal. In addition to the main course, the dinner includes a baked potato, corn on the cob, fresh vegetables, pan-fried bread and ice cream.

This dinner, a tradition since 1946, is a fundraiser organized by the Durkee Community Corp. and proceeds support community events.

Tickets are available in advance at the Baker County Chamber of Commerce, 490 Campbell St., Quail Ridge Golf Course, at Geiser-Pollman Park during the Baker City Show and Shine, or at eventbrite.com (find the link on the Facebook page for Durkee Community Corp). Tickets will also be sold at the gate — cash, check or card are accepted.

Memory Cruise

Returning this year to the show is the Memory Cruise on Main Street when the registered cars will cruise downtown starting at 6:30 p.m. Main Street will be closed to all other traffic from 6-9 p.m.

Simmons said Main Street hasn’t been closed for a cruise for at least five years.
