A tale of two Sherlocks

PENDLETON — When College Community Theatre opens “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” the tale will feature two of the great detective’s adventures — and two actors playing Sherlock Holmes.

Grant Turner adapted the stories into the script for “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” and the tone of the performance may surprise some audiences.

“Not all Sherlock Holmes are scary or daunting,” Turner said. “In fact, I think both of these shows are charming, delightful, and — dare I say — funny.”

“The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” will focus on two of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories: “A Scandal in Bohemia” and “The Musgrave Affair.” The play also features a portion of “A Study in Scarlet” where Holmes meets Watson.

Chris Dennett plays Sherlock Holmes, but Ryan Simpson will also join him on stage in a flashback as Young Sherlock. The appearance of the Young Sherlock happens during “The Musgrave Affair.”

“It’s more of a flashback scene, so I will be more miming what is said by Watson and Sherlock, but it’s still a lot of fun. I get to have a lot of stage time,” Simpson said.

He said his favorite of his scenes has some humor to it.

“I do enjoy when we find [spoiler]’s dead body because I’m very cold and callous about it,” he said.

Simpson said he enjoys the Sherlock Holmes stories he has read and is enjoying the process of acting in one.

“People should watch for some of the things going on in the background,” Simpson said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

This is Simpson’s second theater performance, following a role in CCT’s “Alice in Wonderland” last year. A frequent actor across the region, Dennett has performed for CCT, at the Elgin Opera House and at the Little Theatre of Walla Walla. Dennett previously played Sherlock Holmes in “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” a Sherlock Holmes story adapted and directed by Turner to open the Jewel Theater in Elgin.

“I’m honored to be trusted again with this role,” Dennett said. “It’s also a unique challenge this time around. Last time we did a single story (‘The Adventure of the Speckled Band’), but this time the timeline spans nearly a decade of Sherlock’s life. Even more as there are flashbacks to a much younger Sherlock.”

Although both Sherlocks interact backstage, learning the ins and outs of the character, the two do not interact on stage.

“Since Young Sherlock is being portrayed in flashbacks, my character never actually interacts with him. In fact, I don’t think that Sherlock ever even looks at the flashback taking place on the stage behind him,” Dennett said.

Both actors said they enjoy the Sherlock Holmes stories and the challenge of bringing a well-known character to life.

“There is something in this show that everyone from the most diehard Sherlock fans to those encountering his stories for the first time will enjoy,” Dennett said.
