PENDLETON — There’s a new story on the Pendleton Story Walk this week that features an upcoming play from College Community Theatre.

The Pendleton Story Walk features multiple protected panels spaced along the paved walking path on the Umatilla River Parkway, also known as the levee or river walk.

The Story Walk was first created by a Vermont librarian, Anne Ferguson, who wanted to come up with an innovative way for children and families to enjoy nature and reading at the same time.

In Pendleton, the Story Walk is a joint project of the Pendleton Public Library and Pendleton Parks and Recreation.

Typically, the Pendleton Story Walk panels display a children’s picture book, but sometimes the Story Walk features other kinds of information, such as the history of the Pendleton Round-Up.

“The Story Walk began as a way to share a bit of history along the river walk as well as promote literacy,” Pendleton Public Library Director Jennifer Costley said. ”However, we quickly discovered it was a great way to partner with other organizations in our community.”

The newest “History Walk” partners with College Community Theatre to tell the story behind an upcoming play, “The Petticoat Rebellion.”

The Story Walk gives more information about how a group of women ran a secret election campaign and swept the election in 1916, four years before the 19th amendment.

The panels tell the story of the Petticoat Rebellion and include historic pictures and newspaper articles.

At both the beginning and the end of the History Walk, visitors will be able to scan a QR code and purchase tickets for the CCT play based on the Petticoat Rebellion.

Tickets are also available at www.collegecommunitytheatre.com/box-office/. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

This isn’t the first time the Pendleton Public Library has partnered with a local organization for the Story Walk.

“Last summer we featured the Art Center’s rock and roll camp, and this spring we are excited to help get the word out about the upcoming CCT production,” Costley said.

“The Petticoat Rebellion” opens June 13 in the Bob Clapp Theatre at Blue Mountain Community College.
