ELGIN — The Elgin Opera House is celebrating its “Great Moments in Time” next month with a concert gala.
Those “great moments” highlight past and future shows at the Opera House and iconic performances by Elgin Opera House actors and singers.
“We have a theme of ‘Great Moments in Time’ because we are asking past actors to come and revive some of their roles for one night only,” Gala Coordinator Aubrey Slaughter said.
Slaughter said the idea for the gala came from a brainstorming session with Opera House Music Director Trevor Winder. The duo wanted to do a winter event similar to the Alumni Concert the Opera House hosted over the summer.
“The Alumni Concert went so well that we thought we could do something like that again, and I thought it would be fun to have a reason to dress up all fun and fancy for a night,” she said.
After the plans were set in motion, many of the Elgin Opera House performers jumped at the opportunity to return. In total, the gala will feature 20 songs and 19 performers.
The performance list includes a number of Opera House power hitters, including Winder, Hunter Adams and Carly McKenzie, as well as some members of the Opera House Youth Actors, including Grant Deem, Kaylie Davis and Lily Troutman.
Each performer will present one or more of the songs they have played — or will play — on the Opera House stage. There are rumors, for example, that the student band from “School of Rock” may make an appearance, and that Trevor Winder may give gala attendees a first taste of his performance in “Big Fish,” which opens later this year.
Although the Great Moments in Time Winter Gala is an opportunity to dress up and enjoy musical theater, it’s also a chance to raise money for young performers. The gala is a fundraiser for Opera House Youth Actors, or OHYA, which works with children and teens to help grow musical theater performances and opportunities.
Opera House Executive Director Terry Hale leads the OHYA program and said he considers the program crucial to helping young people develop skills to perform in theater and other endeavors.
“The Opera House Youth Actors team training is crucial as it provides a transformative platform for young talents to hone their theatrical skills, fostering creativity and self-expression,” Hale said. “Through OHYA, participants gain invaluable experience, confidence, and a sense of discipline, contributing to their personal growth and the enrichment of their performing arts skills.”
To continue their experiences, the members of OHYA often travel to different competitions or performance venues. This year, OHYA will be participating in a Disney trip and workshop in March. All of the funds raised at the Winter Gala will go toward helping OHYA get to Disneyland.
As a fundraiser, the event will also have a bake sale and silent auction.
The Great Moments in Time OHYA & Friends Winter Gala is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. Tickets are $10, and the Elgin Opera House is selling tickets both for in-person admission and for a live stream of the event.
Tickets can be purchased for either viewing option at www.elginoperahouse.com.
