JOSEPH — The Josephy Center’s upcoming “Chronicles of Change” exhibit focuses on change and resilience in Wallowa County.

The exhibit opens at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the center, 403 N. Main St., with a keynote talk by Nez Perce Climate Change Program head, Stefanie Krantz.

Paintings, photographs and fabric art from across Oregon and the Northwest highlight ongoing changes in landscapes, economies, forests, grasslands and communities.

The visual art and written works in “Chronicles of Change” include interpretations of climatic change — forests on fire (Sharol Chandler’s “August 21, 2022, 3:27 p.m., Nebo” and Cheryl North’s “World on Fire”), weather (Cheryl North’s “Tornado Alley”), ecosystem trauma (Rene Fleming’s “Fire Season”), and cultural shifts (Jane Glesne’s “Jungle Bus”).

To bring science into partnership with art, “Chronicles of Change” also offers three talks, two field trips and one panel discussion by community leaders. In addition to Krantz’s talk on Oct. 8, Dr. Erica Fleishman, director of Oregon’s Climate Change Research Program, will give a presentation on Oct. 19 (7 p.m. at Fishtrap in Enterprise) and Dr. Ellen Morris Bishop will talk about past climates, climate change and ecosystems in Northeastern Oregon on Oct. 28, 3 p.m., at the Josephy Center.

The “Chronicles of Change” events conclude with a panel discussion of change and resilience in Wallowa County on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at Fishtrap in Enterprise. Panelists Lisa Dawson of the Northeast Oregon Economic Development District, John Punches, OSU Extension Forester and Stefanie Krantz will offer their views on how this region is changing, and how it can adapt to future changes in the economy.

The discussion will provide an opportunity for the community to participate through questions. Fishtrap Executive Director Shannon McNerney will moderate the panel.

Partners in the Chronicles of Change exhibit include Fishtrap, the Eastern Oregon Climate Change Coalition and Wallowology. The Kinsman Foundation and Oregon Arts Commission funded the exhibition and events.

All events are free.
