A band born in the pandemic

- Mylo Bybee released a full-length debut album in August.
BAKER CITY — Three musicians formed Mylo Bybee in early 2020 — an interesting time, for sure, to start a band right before the entertainment world stalled as venues closed due to the pandemic.
But it worked quite well, said Tyler Schlagenhauf, because the band just played with no worry about booking shows.
“We’d just jam around with no expectations,” he said. “We jammed and wrote songs for the better part of a year.”
They even recorded a five-song EP — before anyone heard them live.
“We did things a little bit backward,” he said with a laugh.
However, having a ready album did help the band get gigs, once venues reopened.
“That gave us a little bit of a jump start,” he said.
The band includes Schlagenhauf on guitar, his brother Wes Schlagenhauf on bass, and Jason Guadalupe on drums. They are based in Boise, and play quite a few local shows as well as around the Pacific Northwest.
So far, Mylo Bybee has played shows in La Grande, Enterprise and Wallowa Lake Lodge, and this month they are adding a new Oregon town to the list: Baker City.
The show is Saturday, Nov. 25, at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 6:45 p.m.
And before Mylo Bybee takes the stage, the audience will hear Elephant in the Room, a band featuring Baker High School students who competed in the Battle of the Bands at Churchill in June.
Tickets are $12 in advance at churchillbaker.com or $18 at the door. Admission is free for age 15 and younger who attend with a paid adult.
The band
The brothers have played music for years — on their own.
“We’d never played music together,” Tyler said.
As for songwriting, Tyler said he starts with the vocal pattern and melody, then shares it with the other two band members.
“Then they put their spin on it,” he said.
Their first full album, titled “Master & Machine,” debuted in August and can be found on their website, mylobybee.com, as well as Bandcamp and other streaming services.
Tyler said their sound is “alternative indie rock.” In addition to individual shows, he said the band is booked to play at a festival in Ely, Nevada, in June 2024, and will be looking at other opportunities to play the “festival circuit.”
