BAKER CITY — Crossroads Carnegie Art Center is stepping back to the 1960s with a Spring Fling Dance Party on Saturday, May 3, from 6-9 p.m. at the Baker Elks Lodge, 1896 Second St.
Come dressed in your favorite hippy costume or flower costumes, with contests and prizes for individuals or groups. There will be door prizes and raffles throughout the evening.
Tickets are $15 for an individual or $25 for a couple, with all proceeds going to the 2025 Day of Dance.
DJ Whitney will be spinning the tunes, and the Elks Lodge will have a no-host bar.
This fundraising dance party is to provide funds for the 2025 Day of Dance Event on Sept. 20 at Geiser-Pollman Park. It will be the third annual Day of Dance, which is free to the community and showcases cultural dance groups from around the region.
Day of Dance has a budget of more than $10,000 to host the event and local support is critically needed, said Ginger Savage, executive director of Crossroads.
She said she is waiting to hear back on grants, but local support must make up half of the total budget.
In addition to the May 3 dance, Crossroads is selling raffle tickets for a Bollywood-inspired painting donated by Sherri Linnemeyer. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and are available at the art center.
Also, the center is accepting donations specific to Day of Dance, as well as looking for sponsors.
Kathy Sanchez, Crossroads board member and chair of Day of Dance, is already booking groups and has confirmed these groups: DGIT (African hip hop), Irish Dance Idaho, Boise Chinese Traditional Dance Group, Danza Azteca Tonatiuh and Basque cultural dancer Oinkari from Boise.
“Oinkari” means one who does with his feet, or dancer, in Euskera, the Basque language, according to a press release. Dancers and instructors from the Basque Country have visited Boise and enriched the group’s traditional repertoire. Some members have also had opportunities to travel to the Basque Country and learn additional dances.
The final schedule for the Day of Dance will be announced later in August.
