What We’re Into

I never know which gym I will visit on any given night.

I’ve been to Pine Eagle in Halfway.
Also Huntington, Crane, Spray and even Anaconda, Montana.
And I never left home.

The NFHS Network started in 2013 but it didn’t enter my life until the pandemic.
The network, using cameras placed in gymnasiums, streams sporting events live to anyone with a subscription.
It’s been great — we can still report on away games as we watch them live, and my in-laws, who live across the state, were able to watch their granddaughter play volleyball.
But it’s not just about the home team.
Last winter, on a night we were bored because it had already been dark for hours, my husband, Jayson, scrolled through the live games on NFHS. He clicked on one — Spray, I think — and we joined a small town basketball game on a Friday night.
Each gym is unique in design and decoration (have you ever seen the fierce Spartan that dominates the Pine Eagle floor?). But there is also much in common at these small schools.
Halftime always brings youngsters out of the stands to shoot hoops, dodging toddlers who need to burn some energy.
I can almost smell the popcorn at the concession stands and hear the sprinkle of Skittles dropped on the bleacher by a small spectator.
But no matter the location, be it a big town or small, it makes me smile to see the hometown crowd gathered on a cold winter night to cheer for their athletes.
